CITY OF PROVIDENCE
STATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS
PETITION TO THE HONORABLE MAYOR JORGE O. ELORZA
OPPOSING A TWO-WAY BIKE LANE TREATMENT ON MT. PLEASANT AVENUE
TO THE HONORABLE MAYOR JORGE O. ELORZA OF THE CITY OF PROVIDENCE:
Recently Mayor Jorge Elorza sent a letter to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation supporting his plan to move forward with a redesign of Mt. Pleasant Avenue that includes a two-way bike lane (similar to the Eaton Street design). The residents of Mount Pleasant, Elmhurst and Manton neighborhoods do not want this two-way bike lane implementation installed on Mt. Pleasant Avenue as it is a highly trafficked street that has five schools, a college, two churches, and two city parks and this design treatment is a safety hazard for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists alike.
We the undersigned hereby reject the unilateral redesign of Mt. Pleasant Avenue that includes a two-way bike lane similar to what was attempted on Eaton Street and request that the community be meaningfully engaged with the redesign of our street.
